A dead battery on a Cordova apartment lot is one job. A locked-up sedan on the I-240 loop after a wreck is another. People type cheapest towing in Memphis when they want the lowest honest total for the truck they actually need, written down before anyone rolls.

Cheap is a quote, not a company name

Cheap towing Memphis shoppers often hunt a company that “does cheap.” The cheap number is the quote for this pickup, this drop, this hour, and this truck. Swap any of those and the number moves.

Quick Tow Memphis is a referral service. We take the details from the call and match you with a local operator. The operator does the work and contracts with you directly. We don’t set that operator’s total. Our published standard light-duty hookup starts at $95. That is our floor for a light-duty hook. Miles, truck type, time of day, and hookup difficulty still change what you pay.

A quote that only names the hook is incomplete. Mileage, truck type, and extra work still have to land on the same slip. Ask for the full total with mileage included before you agree. Ask what would change it.

Inside Memphis city limits, wrecker companies have to be approved by the Memphis Transportation Commission. MPD wrecker rotation is a separate approval. At a police scene, the owner’s choice of company is honored, with three exceptions decided by MPD: the company isn’t permitted, it can’t respond in reasonable time, or the vehicle is an immediate traffic hazard. That rule is about who you can name at the scene. It is not a ranking of cheap towing in Memphis TN.

If the car is already gone to the city lot, you are shopping city fees, not a private quote. MPD, Shelby County Sheriff, and Housing and Community Development tows all process through the MPD Vehicle Storage Lot at 465 Klinke Avenue. The city’s impound fee is $135.00 and storage is $30.00 per day, excluding winching or other extra charges. There is no online lookup. Call (901) 636-8200. Those figures are the city’s.

A list of names will not tell you which slip is cheaper for a Whitehaven-to-shop run versus a Germantown driveway pickup. Read the quote.

What usually moves a light-duty total

Light-duty is a sedan, a small SUV, or a compact pickup that still rolls. The total still moves. Distance is the first lever. A two-mile Midtown hop to a Poplar shop is not the same miles as a Cordova pickup headed to a Bartlett bay. It is also not the same as a run that starts in Southaven and crosses into Tennessee. A tow that originates in DeSoto County, Mississippi, or in West Memphis or Marion, Arkansas, is governed by that state’s rules. Tennessee wrecker rules stay on the Tennessee side of the line.

Vehicle size and setup come next. A front-wheel 2024 Honda Civic Sedan on a short local move can travel on a wheel-lift under the front tires, with the rears on the road, per Honda’s emergency-towing section. A 2020 Subaru Legacy or a 2023 Subaru Outback is all-wheel drive. Subaru’s getting-started guides say improper towing can damage that system and that a flatbed is the preferred method. Check the towing or emergency-transport section for your exact year and trim. Recreational-tow notes in an owner’s manual are not a substitute for the operator’s disabled-vehicle plan.

Time of day moves the number. Overnight work around the FedEx Superhub sort window, roughly 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., is a different request than a noon pickup in East Memphis. Ask whether the hour on the clock changes the total.

Truck type is its own line. Wheel-lift is often the cheaper-looking truck on a rolling car. Flatbed is the right truck when all four wheels need to come off the pavement, when the parking brake will not release, or when the car is too low or too damaged to drag. Hookup difficulty is the last common mover. A level lot is one job. A ditch, a median, or a jammed parking garage is another.

For a fuller map of those drivers, read how much a tow costs in Memphis. This page is about how to read the quote in front of you.

How after-hours and distance change the request

A 2 a.m. stall on I-40 over the Hernando de Soto Bridge, the M Bridge, is a shoulder job with through-lanes at your back. A Saturday afternoon pickup on a quiet East Memphis street is a driveway job. Night, weekend, and holiday hours can change what the operator quotes. Ask. Get the after-hours figure in the same written total as the miles. We take calls 24/7, and your call routes to the operator covering your zone. That is the line’s hours. The operator still sets the night number.

Distance is pickup, path, and drop. A Midtown-to-Midtown shop run is short. A Hickory Hill pickup headed to Germantown adds corridor miles. Lamar Avenue, US-78, is the road TDOT’s Memphis Congestion Study calls the top congested state road in the Memphis region and a clogged trucking corridor. A recovery there is a different request than a lot hook behind a Poplar strip center. A long run out toward Collierville on SR-385, the Bill Morris Parkway, adds miles you should hear before you say yes.

If you are on a listed HELP route during patrol hours, start there. TDOT HELP runs free patrols in Memphis, Monday through Sunday, 6:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., on I-40 including the Hernando de Soto Bridge, I-55 from state line to state line, the full I-240 loop, and SR-385 / Bill Morris Parkway. Those trucks handle flat changes, fuel delivery, minor mechanical help, and clearing blocking vehicles. They do not take the car to a shop, a house, or a lot. Anything past lane clearance is a private tow.

Name both ends of the trip in one sentence. “I’m on the I-55 Memphis & Arkansas Bridge shoulder, and I need the car at a shop in Whitehaven” is a request an operator can price. “How cheap can you do a tow” is not.

What to get in writing before dispatch

You get the total in writing before dispatch. You get an itemized invoice. Written authorization and paperwork get produced on request. This is pay-per-call. There is no membership and no annual fee. Those are our process commitments.

The writing should name pickup and drop by city. Midtown, East Memphis, Hickory Hill, and a DeSoto lot are different jobs. It should name the truck: wheel-lift, flatbed, or heavier. It should name the full total with mileage included. It should name what would change that total: extra miles, a winch, a second hook, a wait. If storage might apply, say so before the truck moves.

Tennessee does not publish one statewide dollar cap on the tow itself. A garagekeeper may not charge more than the maximum fee the Tennessee Highway Patrol district has approved for the same service. When a vehicle is towed or stored without the owner’s express written authorization, two statewide money limits apply. A release fee over $100 is prohibited. No gate, access, or release fee may be charged during normal business hours on a day daily storage is also charged. Those rules are in the current MOTION Act, 2025 Public Chapter 457. They govern non-consent work. For how the fee rules actually work, see whether towing fees are regulated in Tennessee.

Inside Memphis, a permitted wrecker that overcharges must reimburse all money paid or release the vehicle free. File that complaint with the Permits Administrator / Wrecker Coordinator at (901) 636-6735 or permits@memphistn.gov. That is the city’s process.

If the slip only names a hook, you still do not have a total. Cheap towing in Memphis TN is the number you can read in full before dispatch.

When the lowest number is the wrong truck

The cheapest-looking quote is often a wheel-lift on a job that needs a flatbed. Honda’s Civic manual wants a flatbed if the parking brake will not release. A 2024 Mazda MX-5 is rear-wheel drive. Mazda says the drive wheels should come off the ground, and all four wheels should come up if the parking brake will not release. A 2013 or 2014 Chevrolet Corvette is a low-clearance example. Chevrolet calls for all four wheels off the ground, and the 2014 book says a wheel lift could damage the car. Check your year and trim. Let the vehicle, not the lowest line, pick the method.

An accident scene, a ditch, or a car that will not roll is not a light hook. Winching and recovery change the work. So does a motorcycle, an RV, or a box truck. Matching the equipment once is cheaper than paying for the wrong truck, then paying again for the right one.

If you are still comparing operators after you know how to read a quote, our Memphis towing companies guide is the next read. A low number that leaves an AWD Outback on two wheels is a drivetrain bill later.

For a breakdown that cannot wait, emergency towing is the service lane. Stay in the car with the doors locked if you are on a live shoulder. Put the hazards on. Give dispatch the nearest exit, mile marker, or cross street: Poplar, Union, Lamar, Summer, Winchester. Name the destination shop or driveway in the same call.
