I-55 in Memphis runs from the Arkansas line at the Memphis & Arkansas Bridge, through the Crump and Brooks exits, past Whitehaven, to the Mississippi state line. It is a listed TDOT HELP route, state line to state line. A stall on this mainline is not a Whitehaven subdivision curb and it is not the mid-span river crossing. Name the direction, the last exit, and whether you are still on the bridge.
Mid-span stalls on either river crossing belong on broke down on the Memphis bridges. Neighborhood streets in Whitehaven belong on car broke down in Whitehaven.
Give the exit, not only “I-55”
Southbound toward Mississippi is not the same stop as northbound toward the river. Say the direction. Then give the last exit you passed: E.H. Crump, McLemore, Brooks, or the Whitehaven / Elvis Presley area. A pin that lands on the I-240 mix can send the operator to the loop instead of I-55.
If you are on the Memphis & Arkansas Bridge, say the bridge. That span carries I-55, not I-40. The Hernando de Soto is the I-40 “M Bridge.” HELP covers both, under those two interstate entries. There is no wide shoulder mid-span. Stay belted. Do not walk the tied-arch or the older I-55 span.
If you can still roll, take the next ramp or a wider gore. Hazards on. Do not cross live lanes on foot. Freight uses this corridor around the clock. The FedEx Superhub runs roughly 250 flights a night, most between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., so overnight traffic on the south side of town stays real even when urban HELP is off.
Once you cross the Mississippi state line, you are in DeSoto County. Tennessee HELP does not follow you. A Southaven or Hernando shoulder is Mississippi. Tell the operator the state.
HELP on I-55 during hours, private after 8:30 p.m.
Urban HELP in Memphis runs Monday through Sunday, 6:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. During those hours, dial 511 and follow the Motorist Assistance prompts. Assistance is not guaranteed. HELP’s listed services are flat changes, fuel delivery, minor mechanical help, and clearing blocking vehicles. Jump starts are not on that list. HELP will not tow you to a shop on Elvis Presley Boulevard, a Whitehaven driveway, or a Southaven lot.
After 8:30 p.m., treat I-55 like any other private interstate call. Overnight roadside help covers that gap. Rural HELP’s on-call overnight support is for major incidents, not a guaranteed individual breakdown.
If HELP clears you to the shoulder and you still need the car at a shop, that second move is a private tow. Ask for it as a separate job with a destination address.
Brooks, Crump, and the state line change the drop
A northbound stall near Crump is close to downtown shops and the river. A southbound stall near Brooks is close to the airport grid and Whitehaven. The state-line mile is a Mississippi handoff. Give the drop address. “Just take it to Memphis” is not an address.
If police are already on scene, owner’s choice still exists unless MPD decides the company isn’t permitted, can’t respond in reasonable time, or the vehicle is an immediate traffic hazard. See what towing company Memphis police use.
If the car is already gone from I-55 inside Memphis, call the MPD Vehicle Storage Lot at (901) 636-8200, 465 Klinke Avenue. Sheriff and HCD tows go there too. A Mississippi police tow does not.
Private operator details that belong on the first call
Year, make, model, drivetrain. Whether the car shifts to neutral. Whether you have the keys. Whether a tire is shredded or the car is just dead. Whether you are in a travel lane, on a shoulder, or in a gore.
Our standard light-duty hookup starts at $95. Distance, vehicle size, time of day, truck type, and hookup difficulty can change the total. Ask for the full amount with mileage included, in writing, before you agree.
Quick Tow Memphis matches you with a local operator. The operator does the work. Call (901) 557-8700. The line takes calls 24/7.
